Calgary is no stranger to snow. Snowy day forecasts can appear on the weather channel anytime between October and May. But just because you’re used to the snow doesn’t necessarily mean you’re fully prepared for the dangers it can pose, especially on the road.
Snowy roads are probably the trickiest terrain to drive on, and if you’re not careful, you might find yourself in a ditch. Here are some tips for driving safely during the snowy season.
There’s no need for speed
We all want to get to our destination ASAP, but as the old saying goes: “It’s better late than never.”
Keeping your speed down and accelerating gently is better when the road is icy or wet. This way, you can be more aware of your surroundings and give yourself enough time to brake or steer without losing control of the car.
Some extra Distance will do you good.
More water or snow on the road means less friction. Try to keep some extra distance between other vehicles and your own. Bumper cars are better left for the fair, where you won’t necessarily have to deal with your insurance company.
Keep your foot over the brake rather than the accelerator. When breaking, make sure to do it gently.
Real Roads have Curves
You have got to watch out for those curves and treat them with respect. As you approach, break gently, keep your wheels in the direction you want to move to, and ease off the accelerator.
If your car skids, stay calm and keep your hands on the wheel. If the car is sliding left, steer to the left. Let your vehicle lose momentum so you can take control again.
It’s all in the Traction
Most cars use 2WD or Two-Wheel Drive, which means the engine powers two of the four wheels. This is a good enough system, but if you want to keep your vehicle under control in any environment, you need good traction.
Vans and SUVs usually have 4WD or AWD systems in which the engine powers all four wheels, making for better handling and extra strength in difficult situations.
