Remember that if you use your bare hands on the car now, you are going to leave greasy fingerprints all over the show. Instead, put your hand in a clean plastic bag and run this along the body. Use a high-quality car polish to remove swirls (not wax) and for tougher blemishes, your best option is using a clay bar.

Waxing properly

We know and understand the love of the power buffer, as it gives amazing professional results, but you have to properly know how to use one to ensure you get the finish that you are looking for. Use a power buffer to apply wax to your car; however, don’t make the mistake of removing it with one too, as this could lead to uneven finishes and swirls. Instead, use a soft, dry cloth to remove the wax once you are done.

Clean your wheels and rims

Once you’ve done the rest of your car, it’s time to move onto the wheels and rims with your new bucket of soapy water. Remember that there are particular products that should be used for different types of rims. If you aren’t sure what to use, then ensure you use the least potent cleaner that you can, so that you don’t damage them.

Carpet cleaning

The interior of your car is relatively simple to clean, except for the carpets and having them spick and span will make a huge difference in the overall look and feel of your car. Remember that you should brush your carpets with a stiff nylon brush to dislodge any stubborn bits before you vacuum. Another great way to get everything out of your carpets is to wear a latex glove and rub your hands over the carpet; the static electricity will make all the little hairs and fibers stand up, and debris will be easily released once you vacuum.

Other than when you buy a house, purchasing a new car is probably one of the most expensive decisions that you are going to make in your lifetime, and as such, it’s not one that should be made on a whim.

We have been keeping an eye on the used car market, and have noted the massive increase in the number of people choosing to go down the used car route rather than buying fresh out of the showroom. In fact, our studies indicate that “Findings from the Q1 2019 State of the Automotive Finance Market report shows that the percentage of prime (61.88 percent) and super-prime (44.78 percent) consumers choosing used vehicles reached an all-time high.”

So, why have we seen such a huge increase in the investment being made in used cars, as opposed to brand new cars over the last couple of years? Here are just a few of the driving factors.

The increasing cost of new technologies

We are in a digitally-driven age, where everything around us is evolving so rapidly that it can be hard to keep up. There has been massive growth in the automation sphere and we are now surrounded by SMART technologies, which seemed to be a distant reality not too long ago.

As a result, sales of electric cars are predicted to grow by over 30% annually.

Buying a car can be seen as exciting or a chore, depending on your liking for cars and your view of them. If you’re a first time buyer, however, it’s likely to be a challenge due to your unfamiliarity with the process. Nevertheless, your first car will give you freedom and independence that you don’t have if you’re relying on others or on public transport, so look forward to a good outcome.

Like anything that’s worth doing, planning and preparation are essential to get the best result. So here are a few tips to point you in the right direction.

Decide What You Want

Although you might fancy a sleek and sporty model, that probably isn’t practical, especially for your first car. Instead, assess what you want it for — how often you’ll use it, how many miles you’ll do, who and what you’ll carry in it.

You want something that’s reliable and practical with all the features you need. Don’t pay extra for features you’ll hardly ever use and can do without but don’t omit features you’ll regret not having. Above all, don’t buy a car you can’t afford to insure, maintain or repair because premiums will be high for a novice driver.

If it’s your first car, you’re unlikely to be buying new. The cost may just be too much and new cars lose a lot of their value as soon as they leave the showroom. A better option is a relatively modern used car that will have all the up-to-date features and still have plenty of useful life in it.

Decide What You Can Afford

Buying your first car can be an expensive business so make sure you don’t take on costs you can’t meet. Before you even start looking at cars, create a budget so you know what you can afford to spend.

Since this will be your first car, you won’t have one to part-exchange and so will need cash for a deposit. You’ll need to determine what you have to spare without leaving you short when something unexpected comes up.

It’s unlikely you’ll be able to pay cash for the car so finance may be the only option. If you’re young and haven’t built up much of a credit history, getting a loan might not be easy but will be more likely if you have a parent as a guarantor.

If you can get a loan, budget carefully to see what you can afford to repay monthly. Take account of all your living expenses, including food, accommodation, utilities, insurance and entertainment. And don’t forget you’ll have extra costs when you get the car — fuel, insurance and repairs as well as the loan repayment.

Do Your Research

Once you’ve decided on the type of car you want, investigate it thoroughly. There’s plenty of information available online so there’s no excuse for not knowing lots about the car before you buy it.

Read all you can to see descriptions, specifications, features and options. Look at reviews, both professional and independent, so you can find other people’s views of the car. And make sure you know the recommended price of a car with the age and condition you’re after.

Inspect and Test

No matter how much research you do online, that’s no substitute for actually seeing and trying out the car. Look at the condition of the bodywork to check for scratches, bumps and rust. Also check the interior since that will tell you how well the car’s been looked after. The engine and mechanics will be more of a challenge, especially as a first time buyer, so take along with you an adult who knows about cars.

The test drive is particularly important since it will tell you if the car really is the one for you. Make sure the driving position is comfortable and adjust the seat and steering wheel until they’re right. Check the position of the controls, how the car feels to drive, all round visibility and how everything feels. Although you can adapt to many things in a car, it’s better if they’re right to start with.

The Negotiation

This can be the most nerve-racking part of the purchase because you’re an amateur and the salesperson does it every day. However, if you’ve prepared thoroughly, you can approach it with confidence.

The salesperson will be aiming to get as high a price as possible while you’ll want to keep the cost low. In effect, you’ll probably end up somewhere in between.

Although the salesperson may talk about the cost in terms of dollars per month, you want to know the total price including and excluding finance costs. And if you have already negotiated a loan, you will be in a stronger position and able to use that or the showroom’s deal if better.

Try to keep it simple by first negotiating a price and then talking about finance. And don’t be pushed into buying unnecessary extras that will add to the cost without providing much benefit. If you do things properly, you’ll end up with the car you want at a price you can afford.

We all need to borrow money at some time, whether it’s for a major expense such as a house purchase or a new car, or something more modest. When you apply for a loan, your credit score is assessed every time to see if you’re suitable.

If your credit score isn’t great, the amount you can borrow may be reduced and the interest you’re charged may be greater. If it’s really bad, you may not get a loan at all and the same applies if you want a credit card. It’s really important, therefore, that your credit score is as good as it can be, so we’ll give you a few tips on how to improve it.

The credit score you have can improve reasonably quickly if you go about it the right way. However, it’s not something you’re going to achieve overnight — around a year is realistic to get it in really good shape, although you can make some improvements much quicker than that.

Obtain and Check Your Credit Score

If you’ve never seen your credit report, you’ll have no idea what your credit score is and so won’t know how potential lenders view you. The two biggest credit bureaus are Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada, and you can get a free copy of your report through the mail from either of them by supplying some basic information. This may take a few weeks and you can get a copy online immediately, for a small fee, if you need it quicker.

Once you get your report, check it thoroughly for problems and to make sure it’s correct. If you do find any errors that reflect badly on you, get them corrected without delay. You can do this by contacting the credit bureau and explaining the situation although, if you want it done quicker, the creditor that caused the error may be a better option.

If you see any old outstanding bills on your report, get them paid without delay. No matter if they’re only for a small amount, they’ll still damage your credit score, so make sure they’re paid and removed from the report. The overall aim is to tidy the credit report and remove anything that’s damaging.

The credit score shown on the report is the one that all lenders look at and, the higher it is, the better your prospects of getting a loan or credit card at a good rate of interest. Your aim is to get this score as high as possible.

Establish a Good Credit History

Anyone who’s never borrowed money or had a credit card will have no credit history. That means a lender won’t have a score to look at when deciding whether to lend money. In this situation, you need to create a good credit history without delay.

The best way to do this is to borrow money, have some sort of debt or have a credit card and make sure all payments are made on time. Late and outstanding payments must be avoided as these damage your credit score (around 35% of your score is based on your credit history).

If you’re in a position where you can’t get a credit card or loan, a secured credit card might be the answer. To obtain one, you’ll need to make an initial deposit but can then use it like a normal credit card. The more you use credit, the more of a credit history you’ll build up and potential lenders will be better able to see how you perform. So make sure you perform well by always paying on time.

Stay Within Your Limits

The aim is never to go overdrawn on your bank account, never to have overdue payments and to stay within your credit card limit. To do that, it’s best to budget your income and spending, so you know your future prospects, and then make sure you don’t overspend.

As regards keeping within your credit card limit, the lower the better is recommended. As a general rule, never go above 70% of your credit limit, so you always have something in hand. Keeping it to about 30-35% of your limit is even better because it shows you’re financially responsible and will help your credit score.

Limit Your Credit Applications

Credit enquiries account for around 10% of your credit score. So, each time you apply for credit or check credit availability and rates, this will count against you and lower your credit score. It’s best, therefore, to limit your credit enquiries.

Having said that, since these enquiries account for a relatively small proportion of your overall score, they’re not the most important item of concern. It’s better to look around and get a good loan interest rate rather than accepting the first offer because you’re worried about your score.

Ensuring Your Credit Score Remains Good

Once you’ve improved your credit score, make sure you keep it at a high level. It’s all about being sensible, living within your means and paying attention to detail.

When you know your score and understand how it’s affected, that’s a lot simpler. And having a good credit score will mean that loans and credit cards are easier to obtain and more affordable.

When buying a new car, it’s easy to examine its physical appearance and get a feel for how it drives. However, what you really need to be assured of before you make a purchase is how mechanically sound the vehicle is. As most consumers walking into a car lot have no mechanical background, it is this aspect of a car purchase which can be the most unnerving. A car might look great on the outside, with awesome interiors too, but under the bonnet could be hiding some undesirable secrets.

However, you don’t need to be trained mechanic to check out some of the key signs of mechanical damage, issues or wear and tear. All you need to know is what to look for. A short examination under the hood could tell you a lot of the vehicle that you are thinking of buying and save you a lot of money.

Here’s five things you need to examine:

Oil contamination

The first thing you need to check is the level and quality of the oil in the car. You can check the oil by pulling out the long dipstick.

What you want to see is clear, brown oil deposits on the end of the dip stick – any signs of a milky or cloudy residue is a problem. Likewise, unscrew and check the oil cap for the same residue. The presence of such residue usually indicates that the oil has not been changed in a long time, and therefore may not have been properly cared for or that the coolant is running into the oil, which indicates the head gasket is blown and the car is nearing a very expensive fix.

Originals bolts, parts and chassis components

A crashed vehicle is unlikely to ever be the same again mechanically and structurally. However, you can do some checks to help you identify if the car has been crashed.

If a vehicle has been involved in an accident, especially a head-on collision, the vehicle repair team will likely have had to replace or at least some of the original parts to try and fix the damage. Look out for any signs that original bolts have been removed or replaced – is there a line where they previously sat? Are any of the bolts off-colour in comparison to others?

Has the crossmember that supports the engine been repainted or does it look bent or damaged in any way? Does any aspect of the chassis look newer? Has the chassis been repainted?

Leaks

Check fluid levels – especially the coolant level – before test driving, monitor again afterwards and again on a return visit. Once you take the car for a test drive, check the area where it was originally parked for any signs of fluid leaks. Examine the oil pan under the car for any leaks and check the seals around all fluid containers under the hood.

Check the condition of hoses and belts

Check the hoses and timing/fan belts under the hood for visible signs of wear and tear such as cracks and worn material. Also, check for “patch-up” jobs where a hose has been taped or glued to fix damage temporarily. If the dealer is claiming these have recently been changed, ask to see receipts.

All too often car owners drive out of their garage with their new vehicle only to discover weeks or months later that hoses and belts were never fully replaced and are presented with a huge cost to fix them out of the blue.

Check for unusual scents/smells

Some signs of mechanical issues or wear and tear are not always visible to the naked eye but indicative by certain scents that are omitted from the vehicle. After you take the car for a test drive, turn the engine off and pop the hood to observe for any tell-tale scents or smells. If you smell burnt oil, this can be a strong sign of an oil leak. Is there a smell of antifreeze? This can be a huge red flag that there may be a coolant leak.

We always highly recommend that you have a mechanic check out any used vehicle you intend on buying. However, the five key checks highlighted above can unearth some of the most significant vehicle issues and can enable you self-assess a vehicle’s mechanical condition quickly on your first visit to the lot.

Founded in 2015, The Royal Rally has had 100s of participants come together to form what is known as the supercharged scavenger-hunt on wheels in Alberta - and House of Cars will be sponsoring this great event for yet another year!

There will be two different types of event categories:

Challenge Series - Teams visit a series of checkpoints and complete tasks at each venue to earn points. This traditional Royal Rally format sees competitors travel to checkpoint destinations with the aide of their Royal Rally route cards. Teams compete for points and event spirit, which are recognized at the awards ceremony.

Navigator Series – Teams navigate to a series of location using their Royal Rally passport to obtain stamps along the route. Each stamp will be only be available for a certain period of time. Teams must solve clues to determine the location of each passport stamp along the route. Teams will regroup at the finish line venue and those who received all passport stamps will receive their official Passport medallion.

Royal Rally is returning to the Alberta Badlands in this epic 2-day overnight event. Get ready for new checkpoints and destinations as the rally ventures into the past. The rally will depart from House of Cars – Airdrie, heading East into the Badlands, before continuing East towards Medicine Hat for the night. Day 2 will see teams return to Calgary on a different route, visiting some new scenery and checkpoint destinations on the way, including a special racing checkpoint, a Royal Rally first! Additionally, teams will be competing for awards and over $5,000 in prizes! Get ready to start your engines!

PASSPORT CHALLENGE: JULY 6

Calgary – Banff Springs – Calgary (450km loop)

Event Class: Navigator Series

Get ready for something completely different! Introducing Royal Rally’s new event class, the Navigator Series! Our first Navigator Series event, Royal Rally – Passport, will take place on Saturday, July 6th and here’s how it’ll work. Teams will receive a Royal Rally passport at the start of their adventure. Your passport contains a list of locations (towns, cities or districts) and clues to the specific location of a Royal Rally crew member, who will stamp your passport to confirm you visited that location. Each passport stamp is only available within a certain time-frame. Miss the window and that stamp is no longer available. Teams must solve clues on the road to determine where and how to find each passport stamp. Teams will regroup at the finish line and will hand in their passport to Royal Rally’s check-in crew, who will present teams who received all passport stamps with an award. This year, the Passport Challenge will take teams from Calgary to the Banff Springs Hotel in the Canadian Rockies, for their famous brunch, and back to Calgary, on a 450km route, for a buffet dinner.

Thunder Run will take teams into the Canadian Rockies for a special themed event, hitting a mix of challenging checkpoints in the Alberta Rockies, before stopping for a unique dining experience and returning to Calgary on a breathtaking route on this epic single-day road rally event. Teams will compete for points, which are earned by completing tasks at checkpoint locations along the route. This event will contain themed checkpoints. We strongly encourage teams to join in on the fun with costumes, vehicle wraps & graphics and gimmicks.

The vast majority of new cars come with a manufacturer’s warranty, but how many folks actually sell their car before that warranty expires? In truth, most people will hold onto their car for a number of years assuming that it runs well and meets their transport needs. However, an extended warranty on a used car will allow you the peace of mind to acquire the car you want with the knowledge that if anything does go wrong, you are covered.

Buying a used car is a tricky undertaking. You always want to get a good deal but in doing so it is vital that the price you pay reflects the research you undertook before finalizing everything. What we mean by this is that sometimes a car can look perfect and the price is almost too good to be true, so much so that our hearts override our rational doubts and we jump before we look.

As such, paying a little more but getting a car that is much more reliable will afford you the luxury of driving a car you won’t have to continue to invest month-by-month as the cracks appear.

But what are the 3 crucial questions to ask when buying a used car? There are many more than 3 questions you will and should ask, regardless of whether you buy from a licensed dealer or a private seller, but we have chosen the handful that we think all buyers need answers to no matter who they deal with.

1) What is the car’s history?

The process of buying a used car has doubt and underlying fear built into it, and this is the primary reason why. Someone else has driven this car for a few months or years prior to you see it, so you absolutely need to know as much as possible.

How many owners? Was it involved in any crashes that required major work? Why did the last owner sell the car, or why is the current owner selling it? Does a lien exist on the vehicle?

There are far too many possibilities to just accept any car at face value, as such, the time you put into researching its history will reward you in the long run. The Vehicle Identification Number, which you should take from the vehicle itself and nowhere else will tell you a lot about the car, and hopefully, alleviate any concerns you may have had. Knowing where it came from and what you can expect spares you unnecessary and unexpected expense in the future.

CarProof is a great way to have an accurate history of the car. If you're buying from a dealership, ask if they provide free CarProof.

2) Does the car have a warranty and if so what does it cover?

This is of particular note to those that are buying from a licensed dealership. Sometimes a car will be quite old and the initial warranty that applied when it was brand new will have expired, however, a dealership that does not offer a warranty on the cars they sell should be asked why they do not.

If an extended period to drive the car is available it is always worth taking this options, simply because you get a sense of whether the seller is trustworthy but also confident in the road worthiness of their vehicle.

Even if a test drive from the dealership for an hour is all that you can avail of, a lot can be learned in this time, particularly if you bring a mechanic with you to look it over and troubleshoot any potential problems that may be lurking under the hood.

There are plenty of advantages to buying a used car. The original owner has already absorbed what will most likely be the greatest percentage of depreciation the vehicle is likely to incur and so, if you find a car that is perhaps only a couple of years old, has low mileage and is in great working condition, you can expect many years of comfortable driving for a fraction of the original price.

However, while there are many people well versed in all things automotive, not everybody has the same level of information when they venture out into the second-hand marketplace.

So, in the spirit of passing on a little education in terms of what to look for and how to proceed when you’re thinking of buying a used car, here is a checklist of things worth bearing in mind.

Are You Buying From an AMVIC Licensed Dealer

Let’s start with something very basic and that’s trust. Customers are always best advised to buy their vehicles from AMVIC-licensed dealers, such as our good selves here at House of Cars. Taking this advice to heart alone ensures that you are dealing with those that follow the consumer protection rules and will allow you to approach them confident in the knowledge that they must supply a completed Mechanical Fitness Assessment (MFA) for the vehicle you are interested in buying, should you request to see it – which you always should, however, private sellers do not have to provide you with one.

Does The Vehicle Have an MFA (mechanical fitness assessment)

MFA is valid for 120 days and will list any items that are missing or do not meet the inspection parameters. If you are happy to proceed with the purchase you can, but it is always best to know what expenses lie ahead before you agree to part with your hard earned cash.

Check The VIN Number

You will need to get the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) before you buy so that you can double check that the number provided matches with the spec of the vehicle you are considering to buy. The VIN allows you to access the model year, ownership history, which country it was built in and at which assembly plant. You can and always should get this number from the vehicle itself and not depend on another document, which could have been forged, or from the word of the seller. CarProof is a great place to get the history of the vehicle, though some dealers such as House of Cars will provide this to you for free.

Be Careful You're Not Buying a Used Car With a Lien

Buyers should always use the VIN to research whether a lien exists on the vehicle. This is essentially outstanding finance lent to a previous owner given on the basis of the vehicle being taken as security. If repayments on this loan are not made in full then the creditor can repossess the vehicle.

Take Your Time When Viewing

When it comes to buying a used car, always take as much time as you need. If you are being rushed into making a decision think twice. Check the vehicle thoroughly, and if buying privately and you have access to a mechanic, it would be a good idea to bring them along for the viewing and test drive.

Call a Professional To Help Out

Those that are not well-versed in all things automotive are best advised to bring a qualified mechanic with them to look over the car and inspect the engine, gearbox, clutch, bodywork, exhaust emission, wheels, tires and interior. It may look like everything is fine to you, but a trained professional will see things that you will not if they are there and potentially spare you a lot of future expense.

Take Your Time Test Driving

Finally, always take the car for a test drive and bring a friend or your trusted mechanic. Try it out in different conditions and drive it until you are satisfied that it ticks all the boxes you hoped it would.
