$50 from every car we sell in the month of November and December will contribute to a fund, which we'll use to help as many families as we can this Winter.

What we need you to do is help us find the families that need some support! Weather it's groceries, toys, furniture or winter tires, we want to help! If you know someone who could use their bills paid, we want to help! If you know someone who needs help fixing their vehicle, we want to help!

Nominate your neighbour, your coworker, family members or whoever you feel deserves a holiday uplift. There is no one-size-fits-all gift package. Our aim is to help families with whatever they need. Tell us their story and how we can help!

We'll be closing nominations on December 1st and will review each and every one of them. We'll pick the submissions that captivate us the most and will surprise those individuals with their gifts in late December.

There's cars that get enthusiasts excited when they're revealed, and then there's cars that enthusiasts dream about for nights on end following the reveal. When Volkswagen announced they were discontinuing the base Golf TSI in North America, it sent shockwaves through the internet. But the GTI and R models would live on in the MK8 platform.

At House of Cars, even though we're not a Volkswagen Dealership, we were incredibly excited to receive both a 2022 Golf GTI and 2022 Golf R on our lots! The Calgary Drop-In offers emergency services to over 20,000 Calgarians each year. Because of our proximity to the Canada - U.S. border, our Fort MacLeod, Alberta, dealership receives many inquiries from U.S. buyers every month! Our dealership is located just one hour North of the Montana border, making it easy for U.S. citizens to purchase a vehicle from us. Because of the high value of the U.S. dollar, on the Canadian dollar, purchasing a vehicle from Canada can be very appealing. The U.S./Canada conversion rate, at the time of writing, has been hovering around $0.74 USD on the Canadian dollar. This means $50,000 USD is worth approximately $68,000 CAD! With an exchange rate as appealing as this, American buyers can score themselves an amazing deal on a Canadian vehicle and bring it back across the border.

We get two types of American buyers at House of Cars Fort MacLeod:

1. In-person buyers driving back across the U.S. border
2. Remote buyers looking to broker/import a vehicle from Canada into the United States.

Regardless of which buyer you are, you'll want to speak with a member of our team to ensure the vehicle you're looking at can be imported to the United States, and have them walk through the importation process with you.

In-person buyers

These buyers cross the border and visit our dealership to see and drive the vehicle in-person, before completing the paperwork and intend on driving their vehicle back across the U.S. border. Here's a look at an importing overview:

1. At the dealership, you'll get a Bill of Sale showing the VIN with your name as the purchaser.

2. You will obtain the Manufacturer’s Statement/Certificate of Origin or the title and registration.

3. We'll help you obtain a temporary license plate and an insurance card from Alberta. You can often extend your U.S. insurance coverage to cover you in Canada as well.

4. You will have to pay a Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the car, but you should be exempt from Provincial Sales Tax (PST) if you aren’t a Canadian resident.

5. We'll ensure the vehicle is thoroughly cleaned and steam-sprayed prior to heading to the border. The U.S. Department of Agriculture wants the undercarriage completely free of any foreign soil.

6. Get your documents in order before attempting to cross the border. You’ll have to fill out form CBP 7501 and some other customs paperwork declaring your possessions, including the vehicle. During that time, the customs officials will take time to inspect your car and match it up with your paperwork.

7. Pay all associated fees. When importing a car from Canada, you will be required to pay fees you may not have encountered before. The total cost will vary depending on the model of vehicle you are importing.

Don't let any of this feel daunting. Our team will help you through the entire process. We'll make sure you get the vehicle back across the border without any issues.

Remote buyers

These buyers purchase the vehicle from within the United States, without crossing the border.

Here's a look at an importing overview:

Can all vehicles be imported from Canada to the United States?

Not all Canadian vehicles meet the standard of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act or the Environmental Protection Agency’s emission standards. Thankfully, the rules aren’t overly strict, and the process of meeting them is called federalization. However some vehicles cannot be imported to the United States. Please inquire with our team to see if the vehicle you're interested in can be imported.

Canada’s motor vehicle safety standards closely resemble U.S. Federal requirements. That’s why the NHTSA issues blanket eligibility covering many Canadian-certified vehicles bound for the U.S. market. If the Canadian-certified car or truck was manufactured before the FMVSS requirements changed, for example, then the vehicle must be updated to meet U.S. standards.

Often this simply involves making basic adjustments or adding basic things, but since this conversation is specific to each model. Our team can assist you with any federalization requirements.

Importing vehicles from Canada is permitted by any person looking to use the vehicle for personal use. It must comply with the Federal Department of Transportation safety standards and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards. If it doesn’t meet those already, then a DOT Registered Importer needs to import the vehicle instead.

Our House of Cars marketing team recently went to check out the Endorphin Dream Garage open house and barbecue to celebrate the launch of their sports car & SUV member-ship-driven rental business.

Our team brought out our brand new ambulance marketing and events vehicle, a matte black Bentley Continental GT and a pink Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG. The Bentley and Mercedes were both showstoppers, but the ambulance took home the cake for the most interesting vehicle!

We had a  blast checking out Ferraris, Porsches, Teslas and more, while getting to know other passionate car enthusiasts who attended the event.

There has been a lot of discussion surrounding Canada's new luxury tax, which was implemented on September 1, 2022. We get a lot of questions from people asking if any of our inventory is affected by the luxury tax. In short, no.

All vehicles priced under $100,000 CAD are not subject to Canada's luxury tax. This makes up about 98% of our inventory.

We do, however, have a selection of inventory priced over $100,000 CAD, so what about those? Will those be subject to the luxury tax?

According to the Government of Canada, all new vehicles priced over $100,000 CAD are subject to a 20% tax for any amount the sale price exceeds $100,000. But that's only if the vehicle is built after 2018 AND has never been registered in Canada.

What that means is: If a brand new vehicle has never been sold before, it has also never been registered at a Canadian registry. If a car is pre-owned, it has therefore previously been registered in Canada. This means all of our inventory is NOT subject to the luxury tax! Weather you're looking for a Honda or a Lamborghini, when you shop at House of Cars, you don't need to be concerned about the luxury tax.

The only scenario where a car in our inventory would be subject to this tax would be if it was imported from another country, like the United States, and has a list price of $100,000 CAD or more.

On September 11, 2022, House of Cars hosted its first annual MY Auto Show event at Westman Village in the SE Calgary community of Mahogany.

The event raised money for the House of Cars Foundation and collected food donations for the Calgary Food Bank.

The first annual event saw 102 cars attend, ranging from vintage Mustangs and Studebakers to a brand new Ferrari Portofino and Audi R8 Performance Coupe. With European, Vintage, American, European and Japanese vehicles present, this epic auto show took the city by storm.

An estimated 2,000+ people took in the sights, enjoyed some free food, mingled with car fanatics and enjoyed free face painting, a bouncy castle, free swag and much more!

It was a truly epic event that will surely become even bigger in the years to come. Our 2023 event announcement is on the way! Stay tuned!

Over the weekend we had the opportunity to sponsor a track day put on by Royal Rally, an automotive road rally company that puts on scavenger-hunt and poker-run style car rallies in Alberta and B.C. They hosted a private track day at Strawberry Creek Raceway, half an hour West of Edmonton, on Sunday, August 28 and this event did not disapoint!

The day featured open lapping around the 4km course, with tons of elevation changes and challenging sections of track. Drivers were given two pace laps around the track before they were unleashed for the rest of the day. Some drivers pushed their cars to their limits, recording track lap times in the ballpark of 2:15 - 2:30. For comparison, the fastest time set on the track is just under 2 minutes, so these drivers were pretty good! Participants were allowed as much, or as little, track time as they wanted.

The event featured Porsches, a Dodge Viper ACR, track-modified BMWs, a Mercedes-AMG GTR Pro, Audis, Mustangs and many more mouth-watering vehicles. The track day was open to anyone who wished to attend. Drivers could register for the track day on Royal Rally's website for a $320 fee, which included lunch and refreshments.

The Government of Canada has introduced a new luxury tax on the sale of certain vehicles priced above $100,000. This new luxury tax, proposed as part of Bill C-19, Budget Implementation Act, 2022, No. 1, affects the sale of vehicles manufactured after 2018, which means a lot of used vehicles are unaffected!

What is the luxury tax in Canada?

On August 10, 2021, the Department of Finance Canada published a paper on the design of the proposed luxury tax for public consultation. On March 11, 2022, the Canadian Government also released draft legislative proposals for stakeholder input. The proposed tax was approved on June 23, 2022.

The luxury tax will come into effect on September 1, 2022.

Vehicles subject to the luxury tax:

The luxury tax will apply to vehicles priced or valued above the $100,000 price threshold.

The tax applies to all motor vehicles that meets all of the following conditions:

• it is designed or adapted primarily to carry individuals on highways and streets
• it has a seating capacity of not more than 10 individuals
• it has a gross vehicle weight rating that is 3,856 kg or less
• it has a date of manufacture after 2018
• it is designed to travel with four or more wheels in contact with the ground

The luxury tax will apply to the sale of vehicles priced above $100,000 and will be payable at the time the sale is completed. A sale is considered completed when possession of the subject vehicle is transferred to the purchaser or when ownership of the subject vehicle is transferred to the purchaser, whichever is earlier.

How does this impact me?

House of Cars carries hundreds of vehicles built in 2018 or earlier, meaning you, the consumer, don't have to pay the luxury tax on those vehicles! This new tax only applies to vehicles built in 2018 or newer, and are sold for $100,000 or more. Any vehicle that is 2018 or newer, but is sold for less than $100,000, is not impacted by the new luxury tax.

Another benefit to buying used comes from being able to take advantage of vehicle depreciation. Brand new vehicles depreciate the moment they are driven off the lot. Typically after 3-4 years, a vehicle could depreciate as much as 40%, meaning that $130,000 vehicle could be priced under $100,000 now!

Nowadays, you’re likely to find a trim level or an available package that focuses on off-roading in nearly every pickup truck’s lineup. These off-roading-oriented trucks come with rugged skid plates, high-performance suspension, off-road tires, and capable four-wheel-drive systems.

All-Wheel-Drive vs 4-Wheel-Drive

That large “4x4” sticker on the side of pickup trucks means it has serious 4-wheel-drive (4WD) capability, right? Sometimes that’s true, and other times, it’s not that simple.

Before we get into it, let’s start with what 4WD means and how it is different from the all-wheel-drive (AWD)?

All-Wheel Drive

Cars, SUVs, and trucks with AWD are great for on-road traction. They can drive on dry, wet, or slippery pavement seamlessly, and the driver can trust that the system will deliver torque to the wheels that need them.

So, how does AWD work?

Most systems use torque fore and aft to the front and rear differentials. These systems are somewhat fluid in how they split up the vehicle’s torque. And that’s important for pavement driving because it makes the system’s moves nearly transparent to the driver.

4-Wheel Drive

It is a part-time system engineered more for off-road driving than dealing with roads affected by foul weather. In most cases, the driver must shift in and out of 4WD.

Some 4WD systems are more complex and capable than others. But when the driver shifts into 4WD, it locks the front and rear axles together, meaning all four wheels receive equal power and rotate at the same speed. Once engaged, 4WD systems don’t rely on a computer to sense wheel slip.

1. 2021 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

The ZR2 package features a 2-inch taller suspension with increased wheel travel thanks to a broader track. This helps the truck tackle off-camber and rocky terrain without losing the grip.

The ZR2 excels at slow-speed crawling thanks to the selectable front and rear locking differentials and more aggressive tires. It comes with a powerful 3.6-litre gas V6 engine or torque-rich diesel for increased efficiency and range, great for long-distance off-road camping thanks to its 20 mpg average combined rating.

2. 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor

Ford’s new Tremor package for the Ranger brings a slightly taller suspension with more wheel travel, 32-inch tall tires, a locking rear differential, and a wider stance. That equipment helps create nearly 10 inches of ground clearance and improvements in approach and departure angles.

3. 2021 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon

The Rubicon is geared for slow-speed trails and wider tracks, bringing extra stability, plus locking differentials and specialized suspensions, a well-respected third-party supplier.

The Rubicon underlines its off-road credentials with an electronically disconnecting front anti-roll bar for optimum axle articulation.

This model has just about every off-road tech tool. Options include all-terrain or mud tires and a choice of manual and automatic transmissions. And there are three engine options: a potent 4-cylinder turbo, a V6, or a diesel.

4. 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4

The Sierra package comes with a 2-inch lift and 32-inch Goodyear Duratrac tires and the Z71 and X31. The Z71/X31 package includes Rancho shocks, a 2-speed transfer case, locking rear diff, skid plates, hill descent control, high-capacity air cleaner, and integrated dual exhaust.

The ride quality on-road and off is smooth, and the chassis has just enough off-road capability to have fun in the dirt.

The GMC AT4 comes standard with a 5.3-litre V8. And it can be optioned with the efficient, 26 highway mpg, 3.0-liter turbo-diesel straight 6-cylinder or the stout 420-horsepower, 6.2-litre V8.

4 Great 4-Wheel-Drive

1. 2016-2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD

The company offers a TRD Off-Road package. The package includes an electronically locking rear differential, skid-plating, and Bilstein dampers. The 265/70R16 all-terrain tires provide almost 10 inches under the front skid plate when it comes to ground clearance.

The 3.5-litre V6 can feel like it needs more torque, but this is generally a smooth, quiet V6.

The Tacoma is an excellent platform for moderate off-roading. Because Tacomas have a solid rep for quality and reliability, you have the peace of mind that your new, used truck won’t spend most of its life in the repair shop.

2. 2015-2020 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X

The Pro-4X offers Bilstein shocks and large 265/75R16 tires. The suspension isn’t raised, but it does ride amazingly smoothly on-road and off.

Pro-4X trucks have skid plates for the oil pan, fuel tank, transfer case, and an electronically locking rear differential. The torquey 4.0-litre V6 is excellent off-road, too.

The soft suspension, large squishy tire sidewalls, and excellent traction make the Nissan fun in the dirt. Around town, the Frontier has steering that feels heavy combined with a wide turning circle.

3. 2015-2018 Ram 1500 Rebel

The Rebel is an excellent 4x4. Every one of these trucks comes with an air suspension taller than the optional suspension on every other Ram. These tires have a nice thick sidewall that makes them excellent for off-road use.

Most Rebels come packing the powerful 395-horsepower 5.7-litre V8 hitched to an 8-speed automatic and turning 3.92:1 gear. That’s a recipe for one quick truck.

The Rebel is one excellent driving package that’s smooth-riding on the street and surprisingly capable off-road.

4. 2013-2018 Ram/Dodge Power Wagon

The Dodge Power Wagon was an immediate hit with 4-wheel-drive enthusiasts, thanks to the taller suspension, 33-inch tires, locking differentials, and that innovative sway bar disconnect system.

It comes equipped with a heavy-duty Warn electric winch. It uses an electronic locking differential in each axle and disconnects the front sway bar.

Even if you are an experienced driver, there are some traffic rules we always forget about.

We can’t 100% avoid accidents, especially if they are caused by situations that are out of our control, but we definitely can prevent some of them.

Proactive driving intends to anticipate possible hazards and take action to reduce, minimize or avoid danger before it can occur.

Never assume other drivers are always going to drive carefully or respond correctly at all times. Anticipating what might happen can help you avoid collisions caused by the driving errors of others.

Here are some tips, laws, guidelines, and resources to help drivers improve safety on Alberta roads.

Road rules for safe driving

Always wear a seatbelt

All drivers and passengers must be properly secured in the vehicle with a seatbelt or an approved child safety seat attached by a seatbelt or an anchor system.

Passengers 16 years of age and older not correctly secured in the vehicle can be fined. You, as the driver, are responsible for ensuring that all passengers in your car under 16 years of age are properly secured.

Scan all around your vehicle

You should give most of your attention to looking forward and scanning for hazards that are developing ahead of you. When driving in an urban area, look at least 12 to 15 seconds ahead of your vehicle, about 1 to 1 1/2 blocks.

When driving in rural areas, look at least 20 to 25 seconds ahead of your vehicle. This visual lead time provides you with time to respond to hazards ahead of you.

Check behind you by glancing in your rearview mirrors every eight to twelve seconds, about every block in an urban area. Glance in your rearview mirror when you anticipate slowing or stopping.

Be aware of vehicles on both sides and in your blind spots. Don’t forget to look at your speedometer to check your speed.

Watch for potential hazards

You should recognize two types of hazards. These are fixed (those that do not change) and variable (those that change) hazards.

Fixed hazards are permanent conditions and situations along the roadway, including:

• Restricted vision areas such as curves, hills, and hidden driveways
• Intersections
• Merging roadways

Variable hazards change through the day, including:

• School children and other pedestrians
• Left-turning vehicles
• Icy road surfaces
• “Stale” green lights
• Emergency vehicles

Be prepared to take action to avoid a problem as the situation changes. Expect the unexpected and always plan an escape route.

Have a space cushion

Leave enough space between yourself and the vehicle ahead, behind, and on either side to stop safely or steer around a possible hazard.

If someone is following too closely, and if it is safe, reduce your speed just enough to encourage them to pass. If the person does not pass, create a wider space cushion between you and the vehicle ahead.

When stopping behind another vehicle in traffic, leave enough space so that you can move your car into another lane without having to reverse. The extra space reduces the risk of hitting the vehicle ahead if you are hit from behind.

This also allows you to move out of the way of a vehicle that may be skidding or slipping on ice behind you.

Plan ahead

Plan your travel route before you set out, and keep it in mind as you drive. Be sure you are in the proper lane well before your exit or turning location. This will help you avoid making quick and dangerous lane changes.

If you miss your exit or turn, continue to the next exit or intersection. Never drive your vehicle in reverse on a roadway to return to a missed exit or turn. Use your signal lights to let other drivers know what you intend to do.

Collision avoidance

Watch the road ahead and stay alert. Watch for any possible problems. If you must turn sharply to avoid something in your lane, stay on your side of the yellow line.

Maintain your following time and distance

You should drive a minimum of 2 seconds behind the vehicle ahead. This is for normal road and weather conditions. When conditions are less than ideal, increase your following distance.

Start counting to know if you are 2 seconds behind the vehicle in front of you when it passes a fixed object like a road marking or a shadow on the roadway. Count one-thousand-and-one, one-thousand-and-two.

If the front of your vehicle reaches the object before you are finished counting, you are following too closely. Reduce your speed and count once more. The 2-second rule works at any speed.

Cellular phones and other distractions

Do not use a cellular phone or other electronic devices while driving. Using a cellular phone to make or receive calls or send a text message is a distraction that can take your attention away from the demanding task of driving.

This applies to hands-free cellular telephones as well. If you want to make or receive a call or receive or send a text message, stop in a safe and legal place.

Do not engage in activities that allow you to be distracted while driving. While all forms of distracted driving can be hazardous, the Traffic Safety Act includes fines and two demerits for inevitable distractions.

These include using a handheld cellphone, texting or emailing, using electronic devices such as laptop computers, video games, cameras, and video entertainment displays, programming portable audio players, entering information on GPS units, reading printing materials in the vehicle, writing, printing or sketching, and personal grooming.

Avoid getting fined

To avoid getting fined or getting in a car accident, follow the rules, regulations, and laws established to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Though you may take optimum care while on the road, you cannot eliminate the risk of an accident. Hence, investing in an insurance plan is highly recommended. You may further enhance your coverage by opting for a comprehensive car insurance plan.

Such a policy offers coverage for most accidental damages. Apart from owning an insurance plan, make sure you renew your car insurance on time before your existing insurance policy expiry.
