Starting at House of Cars Fort MacLeod, drivers will arrive for coffee and doughnuts at 8:30 a.m. The crew will depart at 9 a.m., heading for Calgary, where they'll regroup at the Silverado Sobeys in SW Calgary

Participants will depart Calgary for Canmore, via Bragg Creek. Lunch will be provided at the Iron Goat Pub & Grill in Canmore. After lunch, participants will take the scenic Highway 40 down to Longview and the groups will split off and return to Lethbridge and Calgary from there.

Participants wanting to join from Calgary can meet in the Silverado Sobeys parking lot for 11 a.m. and can take part in the event from that point on. Once the group reached Longview, in the afternoon, the Calgary crew will split off and head back home.

Royal Rally is back on June 24-26, 2023, and House of Cars is excited to be presenting this amazing automotive adventure again in 2023! if you love road trips, scavenger hunts and all things adventure, this event is for you! Royal Rally showcases supercars, sports cars, muscle cars, classics, sports SUVs and more!

Starting in Calgary, Royal Rally's 2023 Retro event will take 45 teams into the Rocky Mountains for a special three day event, hitting a mix of fun checkpoints and activities in the scenic foothills, Rocky Mountains and Okanagan region, before finishing at the historic Three Valley Gap chateau and ghost town. This event will challenge teams in some fun, yet familiar, ways, since this event digs into the past, pulling favourite checkpoints, activities and challenges from previous rallies, while exploring some new locations, roads and venues.

Having participated in over 10 Royal Rally events, the team at House of Cars is excited to be participating in, and sponsoring, Royal Rally's 23rd road rally event in its 9 years of operation!

Royal Rally has released the itinerary for its Retro event and it looks awesome:

Day 1 (Calgary – Radium – Revelstoke):
The ‘get your heart racing’ activity day!

Day 1 will take teams from Calgary to Revelstoke, via Radium, visiting some of the most talked-about rally checkpoints along the way. Day 1 will feature some heart-pounding activities, as well as scenic and historic venues from years’ past! Trust us, you’re going to have a blast!

Driving Distance: 500km

Day 2 (Revelstoke – Kaslo – Vernon):
The ‘scenic drive’ day with a ferry en-route!

Day 2 will see teams depart Revelstoke early, around 8:30 a.m., heading south, towards Kaslo, for lunch, via the Shelter Bay Ferry! Teams will explore brand new roads and checkpoints, but with some of our most talked about checkpoint formats taking place along the route. The day will conclude in Vernon, where teams will spend the night at the Sparking Hill Resort (with hydro therapy spa, steam rooms and hot pools included)!

Driving Distance: 550km

Day 3 (Vernon – 3 Valley Gap):
The ‘sleep-in and relax,’ with a shorter drive day!

Day 3 will see teams depart Vernon later in the morning, around 10 a.m., heading for the Three Valley Gap ghost town. Teams will once again encounter some favourite locations along the way, culminating in a checkpoint activity still talked about to this day! The event will end with a lunchtime awards ceremony and BBQ in the historic ghost town.

Driving Distance: 150km

On this event, teams will compete for points, solving clues along the way. Points are earned by completing tasks at checkpoint locations along the route. The event will wrap up at approximately 2 p.m. on Monday, June 26.

Royal Rally strongly encourages teams to join in on the fun with costumes, vehicle wraps & graphics and gimmicks to increase the fun-factor on the event. The theme for this event is 80s and 90s pop culture!

For our 2022 Christmas outreach campaign, the team at House of Cars launched Hope For The Holidays as a way to give back to the communities that have supported our growth over the years.

Through our website and social media channels, Albertans were given the opportunity to nominate a friend, coworker or neighbour who they felt could use a bit of an uplift this Christmas. From there the team at the House of Cars Foundation reviewed the submissions and hand-selected families whose stories stuck out as exceptional.

Raising funds from every car sold in the month of November, we were able to put together gift packages for over 20 Alberta families, with each package containing roughly $500 in gift cards.

We'd like to thank those who submitted nominations, and to the Alberta community that has trusted House of Cars for all their automotive needs since we first opened in 2012. It has been a pleasure serving Alberta and we firmly believe in giving back to the community that got us started in the first place.

If you've ever bought a car at a new car dealership, you've probably been enticed with a 0% financing deal. Big auto manufacturers like Ford Canada, Honda Canada and General Motors Canada often offer 0% financing rates on the purchase of new vehicles.

But 0% financing isn't as incentivizing as you might think. Since you’re not giving the bank any reason to lend you money (by paying interest), you might be wondering just how it’s possible to get a 0% car deal? It usually isn’t the bank doing the lending but rather the automaker itself. It’s called captive lending.

The way an automaker makes money with a 0% deal is simple: The money does not get made on financing but rather the price of the car itself. Dealers will try to pad the cost of the car so they make their money back. They might also sell you extras to make up the difference, including extended warranties for your vehicle. Bottom line is, 0% financing isn't the amazing deal it seems like it is.

Also, the cost of financing gets built into the price of the car. If you obtain a 0% financing car deal, you likely will not get any other incentives on top of that. And that means the automaker still pockets a nice profit on the sale of the car despite not making any profit on the financing. You're better off utilizing a more normalized interest rate and taking advantage of other incentives the dealer is offering, or shopping elsewhere.

Dealers use 0% financing to get people into the showroom. But only customers with amazing credit can really qualify. To get 0% financing, you generally need a high credit score. This usually means having a credit score of at least 725, which puts you in the "very good credit" category.

Myth: Paying With Cash Will Get You Discounts

We've all heard the phrase "Cash is King" before. But is it actually true? Believe it or not, paying for a vehicle with cash will not get you any discounts. The truth is that credit is power! By having a good credit score, you gain leverage on your vehicle purchase and open up so many more buying options you wouldn't be able to afford by just paying cash. There's often a lot more wiggle-room when it comes to getting a good deal when you're financing a vehicle.

Myth: Only Buy A Car With Low Mileage

We’ve been taught that higher milage cars should be avoided at all cost, but that simply isn't true. When buying a car, you'll want to make sure you have a look at the Carfax report to learn about the vehicle's history. A higher milage vehicle that has been well-cared for and regularly maintained will last you longer and give you way less of a headache than a low mileage vehicle with no available history. Finding out the history of a car is far more valuable than just relying on its odometer reading.

To learn the history of a used car in Alberta, all you need to do is ask your sales representative for the Carproof report, which is included with each vehicle for sale at House of Cars. If the car lot or private seller you’re working with doesn’t make a CARFAX report available to you, you should walk away from the deal. You may be in for a bug headache.

Myth: Never Finance A Car Through A Car Dealership

Some people believe that seeking their own financing from their bank or credit union will get them a better deal. But if you have good credit, financing at the dealer can often make better sense than a private bank or credit union. Even if you have bad credit, why would you seek out a single lending option for your vehicle purchase when House of Cars has access to over 30 lenders? A private seller also has no obligation to show you the vehicle's history report and can often hide the vehicle's issues, which you'll only figure out once a few days after you've taken the car home. The idea is that the sales staff will be desperate to get home, so they'll be more willing to meet you at a more favorable price. That's an entirely reasonable human assumption, but it's perfectly ordinary for a salesperson to work well past closing time to make a deal. Some people believe that if they buy a car at the end of the month, a salesperson might be willing to give them more of a deal because they are eager to meet their sales quota. This is simply not true. Purchasing a car in the final days of the month will not garner you a better deal. The best way to get a good deal on the vehicle is to build up your credit score. This gives you access to so many more financing options and lower interest rates. Plus you can get better deals at any time of the month!

Myth: The Lower Your Payment, The Cheaper It Is

If you're a bit tight on cash, it makes sense to keep an eye on what you can actually afford each month. A $200 per month payment for 7 years is not cheaper than a $250 per month payment for 5 years. You'll actually be paying more money on that "lower payment" because of interest. Worse still, because most loans are front-loaded on interest payments, it's easier to end up "upside down" (owing more on the car than it's worth) with longer-term loans. The bottom line: be sure you know how much that lower monthly payment is costing you in the long run.

What exactly is the "best" vehicle to buy for Alberta Winters? Is there even a right answer?
No matter who you ask, you're going to get a different answer. The better question to ask is: What is the best vehicle for me?

There's plenty to consider when looking at a new vehicle that can handle our dreadful snowfalls and bitter cold temperatures. Here's some tips on what to look for in a vehicle, to best suit your needs in Alberta's winters.

All Wheel Drive:

Many people continue to argue about all-wheel-drive and which systems are truly superior. We previously wrote an article featuring the top AWD systems for Alberta winters. The bottom line is that most AWD systems in modern vehicles are great, and you can't go wrong. Some of the front-runners are: Subaru, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW and Acura. No matter what vehicle you're looking at, if it is equipped with all-wheel-drive, you're putting yourself in a better position than if you're looking at a FWD or RWD vehicle.

Roof Racks and Ski Boxes:

A lot of vehicles we well come equipped with roof rails, which are perfect for mounting ski boxes and roof racks on. For the skiers, snowboarders and travelers out there, you know how valuable it is to have a roof rack or ski box to haul your sports gear in. The last thing you need is to throw your snow-covered skis or sweaty hockey equipment in the back of your sedan or SUV. Be sure to look for a vehicle equipped with roof rails or a roof rack if you're interested in snow-sports.

Winter Driving Modes:

For decades, luxury automakers have been adding snow modes to their vehicles. Snow modes change the throttle inputs to be more gradual, change the transmission settings to reduce torque, and change the differential settings to lock up in advance of a loss of traction. Vehicles with all-wheel drive have an advantage, of course, but front- and rear-drive vehicles also have snow modes.

Heated Windshield:

The view ahead is important for safety, and in icy windshields are hard to keep clear. Another problem is keeping windshield wipers from getting crusted with slush and snow that then prevents proper clearing. There are remedies for this and we strongly suggest that any shopper serious about winter driving find a vehicle with one of them.

Luxury cars like Jaguars, Volvo, and Land Rovers now come with a fully heated windshield option. Small wires heat the whole glass surface, which clears ice and acts as a defogger without blowing hot air in your face.

Other manufacturers like Toyota and Subaru have long offered affordable windshield heating along the base of the windshield and sometimes up the side of the driver’s A-pillar. This is quite effective too. We highly suggest vehicles with some form of windshield heater.

Heated Steering Wheel:

Is this one necessary? No. Is it nice to have? Yes! One of the best thing since the invention of the wheel is the heated steering wheel. If you have not owned a vehicle with one, you are in for a very pleasant surprise. Once you've owned a car with a heated steering wheel, you won't go back! It may sound overrated, but a heated steering wheel is a big help on cold days and allows you to drive without gloves. Put this option on the top of your wish list.

Cleaning the inside of your car is just as important as cleaning the exterior. Sure, the body is the first impression of your car, but you and the passengers spend time inside the vehicle and might as well have it clean and with a pleasant smell.

Regardless of the material of the seats, they need to be cleaned. They can easily absorb sweat and skin oil if they are cloth, and the leather seats can quickly get dirt stuck or be scratched.

What do I need?

The materials you need are budget-friendly and easy to find. All you need is a powerful vacuum, a brush set, a few microfiber towels, carpet cleaner, some leather, vinyl cleaner, and conditioner.

Because you will be properly cleaning the seats, you’ll need to take them out of the vehicle, but before you do that, disconnect the negative battery.

Consider that nowadays, most seats have airbags, so avoid any accidents or problems by disconnecting the battery cable 20 minutes before removing the seats.

Now you are ready to begin.

Cloth Seats

Start by vacuuming the seats to remove all dirt. If you are having trouble with a specific part, brush it while you keep vacuuming. And for any hard-to-remove stains, spray some warm soapy water and brush, then wipe it with a clean microfiber towel.

Spray the carpet cleaner, brush the seat in different directions, then just grab a microfiber towel and remove the cleanser.

For the seat's plastic side, grab some interior detailer, spray it on a microfiber towel, and wipe the sides.

Next, clean would be the metal brackets that connect the seat to the car. For that, just spray some warm soapy water, brush everything with a small brush (a toothbrush works just fine), and wipe it with a towel.

The last part of cleaning would be the seatbelt.

Pull it out and use a clamp to prevent it from retracting. Grab your carpet cleaner and a microfiber towel, saturate the towel and run it along the seatbelt. Finish with a clean microfiber towel and wipe the seat belt.

After you are done, leave the seat belt out and let it dry.

Leather Seats

Start by vacuuming the seats to remove any loose dirt stuck, and do the same trick with the brush. Use it on the hard-to-remove parts. Grab the leather and vinyl cleaner, spray it on a microfiber towel, wipe the seats, and let it dry.

There’s an extra step if you want to do it.

If you have a steamer blow some steam on the seats before applying the leather and vinyl cleaner, this will open the leather pores and allow the cleaning products to do a better job.

Now is the time for the conditioner. Apply some conditioner to a brush and brush the seat's surface, then just grab a microfiber towel and wipe the conditioner off.

House of Cars is very excited to announce a new partnership with Racing For A Cure 2023!

Racing For A Cure is an Edmonton-based automotive charity fundraiser event on steroids! It's the biggest charity event of its kind in Canada! The event, geared towards the kids, takes the form of a single-day car show fundraiser event in which sick kids have the opportunity to ride along in some very cool vehicles as well as soar above Edmonton in a helicopter, with show-goers having the opportunity to admire some incredible machinery!

House of Cars is a title sponsor of Racing For A Cure 2023 and will also be entering eight vehicles in the event. We're extremely excited to be supporting such a great cause!

This year's event will take place at the River Cree Resort & Casino in Edmonton, AB, on Saturday, June 17, 2023

The event is open to the public, with families attending for a full day of fun! In addition to over 100 sports cars and supercars on display, Racing For A Cure features bouncy houses, obstacle courses, climbing wall, reverse bungee jump, remote-control car races, face painters, balloon artists, food trucks, jet cars, police cars, helicopters, mascots and much more!

The event supports the Stollery Children's Hospital. Donations help the Stollery invest in the best people, programs, equipment and research to advance children’s health care right in our own backyard!

The Stollery Children’s Hospital hosts the only pediatric emergency in northern Alberta, it is the referral centre for all complex pediatric heart surgeries and transplants, a major organ transplantation centre, home to Canada’s largest regional program for neonatal intensive and intermediate care, and provides some of the most advanced treatments for child-health issues in the country.

Volkswagen Beetles cruised the streets for over 80 years, but production ended in 2019.

Let’s talk more about the history of this iconic vehicle.

A Special Commission

In the 30s, Adolf Hitler commissioned The Beetle. The goal was an affordable, practical and reliable vehicle. As a result, the “People’s Car” (volks wagen in german) was born thanks to the design of Ferdinand Porsche.

The Beetle became a symbol in the 60s, but in the late 1970s, their production in Germany stopped. But as a tribute, they released the New Beetle in 1998.

Let’s get deeper into the different models through the years.

From 1940 to 1950

After WWII, the German factory was controlled by the British. By the end of 1946, it manufactured more than ten thousand cars; a year later, it sold a million.

Almost a decade later, two copywriters from the New York advertising agency “Doyle Dane Bernbach” created the iconic Volkswagen ad. The ad consisted of a tiny image of a Beetle in a plain white space with the phrase “Think small.”

Even though the Beetle was so small, the ad was big. Forty years later, it was awarded the best advertising campaign of the 20^th century.

Welcome to the 70s

In 1971 the Super Beetle was introduced to the market. This new model had a new front suspension and a bigger trunk.

By the following year, Volkswagen set a record as the best-selling car in the world, beating the Ford Model T that held the title for over 40 years. By February of 1972, The Beetle number 15,007,034 was assembled.

A Major Update

In 1998 there was a significant change in the production lines related to the Type 1, which practically turned the Beetle into a Volkswagen Golf.

The car had 115 horsepower and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and the dashboard had a small vase.

Time passed, and sales started to decline in 2013, so about five years later, Volkswagen announced the Beetle's last ride, which was the end of its production.

Acura SH-AWD

If there was an over-achiever of AWD systems, for Alberta winters, this would be at the top of our list! Acura’s SH-AWD system is a true performer!

SH-AWD stands for Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. Yes, it lives up to its name!

According to Acura, it was the first AWD system to use its rear differential to control power distribution not only front to rear, but also side to side at the rear wheels. SH-AWD can send up to 70% of the engine’s power to the rear wheels, and 100% of that rear-driven torque to just one rear wheel if needed. Now that's amazing!

It can then further accelerate the vehicle’s outside rear wheel in turns, generating additional turning force — essentially using the rear wheels to steer the vehicle.

SH-AWD accomplishes this with a trick torque-vectoring rear differential that contains two multi-plate clutches that can distribute torque individually to the left and right rear wheels.

Instead of waiting for a wheel to slip, SH-AWD monitors the driver’s steering and throttle inputs, wheel speed, and cornering forces (lateral g and yaw) to proactively begin redistributing power to enhance cornering performance.

Audi Quattro

It's Quattro season! Long have driving enthusiasts proclaimed that Audi's Quattro AWD system is the best of the best, and we have to agree! If Acura’s SH-AWD is the high school valedictorian of AWD systems, then Audi’s quattro would be its tenured professor! Quattro has years of history and experience, making it a legend!

Audi’s quattro system was tested and proven in rally car racing in the 80s and is credited with helping popularize AWD systems across the globe.

So it’s no surprise that Audi is second to none when it comes to the AWD systems it offers. Each quattro system is specifically tailored to the vehicle that it’s found on, and all of them are extremely capable!

Most of these models use an Audi-designed Torsen system, which is a permanent AWD system. This means all four wheels receive power 100% of the time, providing outstanding grip compared to many other systems that operate only in two-wheel drive mode until a wheel slips.

Most importantly, Audi went to great lengths to ensure this quattro system can handle high power output and extreme levels of abuse, making it one of the most durable AWD systems on the market. Yes, it’s also suitable for off-roading.

BMW xDrive

The Germans are great at manufacturing some of the world's best all-wheel-drive platforms, which is why BMW is at the top of our list.

BMW's xDrive system reacts very quickly to wheel slippage and its multi-plate clutch system is tenacious with a very high clutch torque capacity, enabling the system to effectively transfer power between the axles, even in more challenging situations.

In addition, xDrive is proactive, constantly monitoring driver inputs to vary torque distribution to improve handling and stability, and can revert to rear-wheel drive on many models to enhance cornering performance.

BMW also offers the torque-vectoring M Sport Differential on M models for enhanced cornering performance over the standard xDrive system.

Mercedes Benz 4MATIC

The 4MATIC system from Mercedes is another truly superb brand and also on our list of reamended AWD systems. This shouldn’t be surprising, considering Mercedes-Benz has a long history of making 4WD and AWD vehicles, from the military-grade G-Wagons to the advanced systems found on its vehicles today.

Mercedes features different 4MATIC systems specifically tailored to the vehicle that it’s found on. Mercedes SUVs in particular have very capable 4MATIC AWD systems. You can find videos on YouTube of Mercedes SUVs climbing 100% grades (that’s a 45-degree angle).

For comparison, most AWD systems will have difficulty (or will completely fail) climbing a 60% grade. And if that hill is covered in ice or anything slippery, many won’t even make it up a 30% grade.

So if you want a vehicle with an AWD system that can practically scale a wall and look classy doing it, the Mercedes 4MATIC system is a good choice.

Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive

As a car company, Subaru has always been a top-contender. Subaru positions the entire drivetrain in the middle of the car, enabling the system to have a symmetrical construction, and can distribute power evenly to all four wheels when needed.

Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system varies significantly depending on the car, and is tailored to that car’s specific intended purpose. Unsurprisingly, Subaru’s performance-oriented DCCT system found on the WRX STi offers a rearward bias and tenacious grip.

The systems found on the Outback, Legacy, Forester and Ascent are fantastic, due to their construction and versatility. But you can’t go wrong with any Subaru system as they are all extremely well engineered.

That’s because Subaru’s systems, like the other systems here, have very great hardware and software to keep power distributing to all four wheels. Subaru’s available X Mode system is one of the most well-designed traction management systems out there, optimizing the operation of the AWD system depending on the situation, and gives Subarus with this feature impressive off-road capability.

Featured Vehicle: 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X Final Edition

Low production vehicles can be worth a pretty penny, especially when they commemorate the last year of production for a certain vehicle. The 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X is no exception! When it was announced that the Evo X was retiring in 2015, one dealer in Canada marked their brand new vehicle up to $148,000. It was common for the beloved Evo X Final Edition to be sold for over MSRP, but thankfully, in 2022, you can buy a 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Final Edition for a very fair price. It just so happens that we have one for sale at one of our Calgary dealership (and it's under $40,000)!

Meet our blue Final Edition Evo X, number 240/350 for the Canadian market (yes, it has a number plaque showing its designation.) This makes the Final Edition extremely rare and collectable.

Seeing as this car is a Final Edition, it features a few differences over the regular Lancer Evolution, such as a black painted roof, “Final Edition” badging on the trunk and a set of Final Edition BBS wheels.

The turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder engine is rated at 303 horsepower from the factory, delivers impressive mid-range torque, and sounds as impressive as it drives. To put it frankly, being behind the wheel will make your cheeks hurt from smiling so much! Each of the five forward gears engages with precision, and the overdrive fifth gear doesn’t slow the engine down much for freeway driving thanks to the super short final-drive ratio. Steering the car is incredibly engaging and will make any car enthusiast smile. When you're powering this sedan around corners, you're super in-tune with the car and hyper-aware of where you're piloting this unassuming Rocketship due to the engaging steering setup! This is a full-immersion automobile and it feels amazing to drive!

Based on the current Evolution X GSR, the hood, front fenders, and roof are aluminum. The only transmission available on the car is the quaint five-speed. The front seats are Recaros, which says a lot about what the car was built for. The suspension features Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks, and those are indeed big Brembo brakes behind each 18-inch BBS wheel.
